Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 - Domaine Laurent Roumier
THE WINE
The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 from Domaine Laurent Roumier is a profound and impeccably balanced Pinot Noir that reflects the grandeur of one of Burgundy's most iconic Grand Cru vineyards. The outstanding 2016 vintage delivers remarkable concentration while retaining exceptional freshness and precision. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, wild blackberry, and violet unfold alongside layers of liquorice, sweet baking spice, forest floor, dried leaves, and crushed limestone. On the palate, the wine is deep, powerful, and beautifully structured, with dense yet silky tannins supporting a core of vibrant dark fruit. The exceptional terroir of Clos Vougeot lends a commanding mineral backbone and remarkable depth, while carefully integrated French oak adds subtle complexity without masking the wine's purity. The finish is exceptionally long, refined, and persistent, revealing layers of savoury spice, earthy complexity, and floral elegance. A classic Grand Cru of immense character, it combines strength with remarkable finesse and will continue to evolve gracefully for decades.
THE WINEMAKER
Laurent Roumier is a highly respected vigneron from one of Burgundy's most distinguished winemaking families. The grandson of Georges Roumier and cousin of Christophe Roumier, he established his own domaine in 1991 and has earned a reputation for producing wines that express elegance, purity, and terroir with remarkable consistency. The estate follows traditional viticulture with meticulous vineyard management, hand harvesting, and low yields to ensure optimal fruit quality. In the cellar, the grapes are fully destemmed, gently fermented in concrete vats, and matured for 15 to 18 months in French oak, with approximately 50% new barrels for Grand Cru wines. This restrained approach preserves the individuality of each vineyard while producing wines of exceptional balance, aromatic precision, and ageing potential. Laurent Roumier's wines are celebrated for combining classical Côte de Nuits structure with accessibility and finesse, making them among the most compelling expressions of modern Burgundy.
